Iwona has a background in Environmental Protection with specialisations: Protection of Water and Soils, and Fluid Mechanics. She has experience in water flow and water quality modelling. Her research interest at present is focused on understanding and predicting the water, energy and carbon balances of the land surface and spatio-temporal modelling of its processes using the JULES model.

Within Carbo-BioCrop

Iwona will contribute to Work Package 3 (Process-based modelling to enable predictive understanding of long term carbon and GHG fluxes in bioenergy cropping systems, in relation to site and climate) within which she will focus on improvements to one of the models used in the project – the JULES model – for energy crop (Miscanthus and SRC willow) growth and soil processes. She will use this process-based model for testing the conceptual models developed in Work Package 2 (WP2), against actual measurements, and she will develop and validate it with data provided by WP1 and WP2. The improved JULES model will allow her to extrapolate from the field sites to the UK scale using a rigorous methodology and to estimate the effect of second generation energy cropping on UK carbon emissions. Finally she will use JULES to generate “Carbon Opportunity Maps”.
