Dr Gary Bending is an environmental microbiologist with expertise in studying soil biogeochemical cycling processes.

Role in Carbo-BioCrop

Within the Carbo-BioCrop project He acts as a supervisor to a PDRA based at CEH Lancaster investigating flux of C from roots to soil using 13C pulse labelling experiments. He is principal supervisor of a PhD student, Chris Barnes, who is investigating the role of mycorrhizal fungi in the cycling of carbon under bioenergy crops The work will use a field site in Lincolnshire to compare the flux and residence time of mycorrhiza derived C in soil under Miscanthus and willow, and the extent to which it varies spatially and temporally. Dr Bending is also co-supervisor of a PhD student based at the University of Edinburgh studying the effect of biochar application on greenhouse gas balances in bioenergy cropping systems.
